Description

The GBV-100-385-2-FM is a Class II (Type 2) surge protective device designed for the second stage (Class B) of lightning and surge protection for load equipment on AC power systems. It limits transient overvoltages on the protected circuit and indicates its own operating status through a colour-changing window.

Product Overview

The GBV-100 series is intended for installation in LPZ1 zones or directly inside distribution cabinets (switch boxes). The GBV-100-385-2-FM is the two-pole variant of the series, rated for a maximum continuous operating voltage Uc of 385V. It is connected in parallel to the power line and is fixed on a 35mm electrical DIN rail.

Key Features

  • Class II (Type 2) surge protection for the second stage of power system protection
  • Nominal discharge current In 50kA and maximum discharge current Imax 100kA, both at the 8/20μs waveform
  • Voltage protection level Up of 2.4kV at In
  • Fast response: tA ≤25ns for L-N and ≤100ns for N-PE
  • Status window: white indicates normal operation, red indicates the device has failed
  • Optional remote signalling via an alarm dry contact, NC-COM (normally closed)
  • Housing made of reinforced thermoplastic, UL94-V0
  • IP20 degree of protection

Applications

The GBV-100-385-2-FM is used for second-stage (Class B) lightning and surge protection of load equipment on power systems. It can be installed in LPZ1 zones or directly in distribution cabinets (switch boxes).

Installation and Use

  • Before installation, inspect the surge protective device. Do not install a device that shows any defect.
  • Use the device only within the conditions stated in its technical data. Exceeding the given upper limits may damage the surge protective device itself and the equipment being protected.
  • Installation must follow the relevant standards and specifications for the device and must be carried out by qualified personnel holding the relevant certificates, ahead of the electronic equipment to be protected.
  • The device can be installed in LPZ1 zones or directly in distribution cabinets (switch boxes).
  • Fix the device on a 35mm electrical DIN rail.
  • Connect the surge protective device in parallel to the power line: “L/+” connects to the phase conductor or positive line, and “N/-” connects to the neutral conductor or negative line. The copper conductor cross-section at both ends of the device is 10-35mm².
  • For a surge protective device installed on a circuit, an overcurrent protection device such as an air switch or fuse must be fitted upstream.
  • Connect the ground of the surge protective device with the shortest possible conductor. The device uses terminal grounding: the “PE” ground conductor must be connected to the lightning protection ground line.
  • Keep sufficient safety distance between the circuit protected by the surge protective device and the incoming line and ground line to avoid secondary induction effects on the circuit.
  • When installed within the specified conditions, the device does not require long-term maintenance; only routine system maintenance is needed. If the white indicator window turns red during use, the surge protective device has failed and must be repaired or replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the status window indicate?

A white window indicates the device is normal. A red window indicates the device has failed and needs repair or replacement.

How is the GBV-100-385-2-FM connected?

It is connected in parallel to the power line. “L/+” connects to the phase or positive line, “N/-” connects to the neutral or negative line, and the “PE” terminal must be connected to the lightning protection ground line. Conductor cross-section is 10-35mm².

What upstream protection is required?

An overcurrent protection device such as an air switch or fuse must be installed ahead of the surge protective device on the circuit. A 100Agl/gG backup fuse is specified.

Is remote signalling available?

Yes, an optional alarm dry contact is available with NC-COM (normally closed) configuration.
